SOLO LITERATURE FOR TROMBONE AND HARP: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Dr. Setzer compiled an annotated bibliography on literature for trombone and harp during his time at CCM. This document is intended to raise awareness of the existence of works for trombone and harp and generate interest in this genre. It focuses on original solos, transcriptions, trios, quartets, and chamber music involving trombone and harp. This book is constantly being updated as new works are discovered and commissioned. In its current format, it is 101 pages, providing information on hundreds of works involving trombone and harp, a recording discography and publishing/contact information. Please contact me if you have any additional information or questions about this genre of music.

AL CIRCO: FOR TROMBONE AND HARP
David Stout's Al Circo (To The Circus) is believed to be the oldest original solo for trombone and harp, composed in 1968 while he was a student at the Eastman School of Music. This work was premiered by Trombonist Fred Boyd, and is dedicated to Emory Remington. After rediscovering this work during his research, Louis received permission from the composer to update the original manuscript to make it more readily available to the music community.
This 7’ work is in two movements, both in a lighter nature and humorous. Mute colors are an important part of the mood of the work. It is appropriate for advanced performers.
The JOLO duo performed Al Circo at the American Trombone Workshop in March 2019.
This solo is now available for purchase at CherryClassics.
SCHUMANN: FOUR SONGS FROM DICHTERLIEBE ARR. SETZER (2016)
Trombones and vocal music have been linked from its inception, with the trombone playing a vital role in sacred music. It is no coincidence that certain vocal works have become standards in the trombone repertoire (Mahler Songs of a Wayfarer, Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel). I heard a performance of Michael Mulcahy performing Dichterliebe with piano at the Mulcahy seminar and I absolutely loved it, but I wanted something a little different. I arranged four songs from Dichterliebe (Im Wunderschönen Monat Mai, Ich Grolle Nicht, Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen, and Am Leuchtenden Sommermorgen) for trombone solo with trombone quartet accompaniment.
I have included a live performance of this work from the 2020 American Trombone Workshop.
